Dr. Derrick R. Brooms, Executive Director of The Black Men’s Research Institute (BMRI) has been named the Inaugural Distinguished Scholar Awardee by the California State University Young Males of Color (CSU YMOC) Consortium.

This prestigious honor recognizes Dr. Brooms’ critical scholarship and his sustained commitment to improving educational experiences and outcomes for men of color in higher education.

For decades, Dr. Brooms has advanced research that moves beyond theory, work that connects deeply with lived experiences and informs meaningful, equity-centered practice. His scholarship centers the voices, realities, and possibilities of Black men and boys, and his leadership continues to shape national conversations about student success, belonging, and institutional responsibility.

In accepting the award, Dr. Brooms shared his gratitude for the colleagues who have been part of this collective effort. He extended heartfelt thanks to William Franklin, Matthew Smith, Jesse Enriquez, Ph.D., Eligio Martinez Jr., Ph.D., Samantha E., and the broader CSU YMOC community for their support, collaboration, and shared commitment to transformation.

This recognition marks an important milestone, not only for Dr. Brooms’ distinguished career but for the broader movement to strengthen pathways for young men of color across higher education. Morehouse College celebrates this achievement and looks forward to the continued impact of his scholarship and leadership.
