This fall, Morehouse College is excited to welcome Calvin Butts '28, a freshman sports journalism major from Harlem, New York, who embodies the perfect blend of athletics and academic dedication.
As a dual-sport student athlete, Calvin's high school years were nothing short of remarkable. He not only excelled in sports but also made significant strides in his social and extracurricular activities. During his senior year, Calvin served as the captain of both the varsity basketball and baseball teams, leading with distinction and earning the MVP title for both sports. Beyond the field and court, Calvin's talents extended to music, where he was the lead trumpet for his jazz ensemble, and to the arts, where he presided over his school’s Video Arts and Entertainment Club.
Calvin’s decision to attend Morehouse was deeply influenced by his grandfather, the revered Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts III ’72. His grandfather’s legacy at Morehouse, marked by confidence, pride, and a commitment to service, left a lasting impression on Calvin. He shares how influential Morehouse was in shaping his grandfather's journey, and he is eager to walk in those same footsteps.
At Morehouse, Calvin plans to continue his athletic journey as a member of the Maroon Tiger Baseball Team, where he is sure to bring the same level of dedication and excellence that has defined his career thus far. As he embarks on his path in sports journalism, Calvin is poised to carry forward the legacy of excellence that his family and Morehouse have instilled in him.
Welcome to the House, Calvin!
