Michael Daniel McGirt is a political science major with a minor in economics from Durham, NC, who has served as freshmen class president, a student trustee for three years on the Morehouse College Board of Trustees and is currently the 90th Student Government Association president. In additional to his leadership roles, Michael is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.; community service organization Lytehouse. Off campus, he was an intern for the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus; a career fellow for the Managing Leadership for Tomorrow cohort; a covenant fellow with the General Consulate of Israel; and worked on Morehouse alumnus Sen. Raphael Warnock's senate campaign. Amidst all his extra-curricular activities, Michael has maintained his academic status on the Dean's List and Honor Roll; is a Martin Luther King Legacy Scholarship Recipient, a James Jones Scholar, and Covenant Scholar.
After graduation, Michael will begin a career in consulting at Deloitte, where he intends to improve upon his problem-solving skills with the goals of applying them to systemic issues facing his surrounding community.
During his tenure at Morehouse, Michael had to overcome the obstacle of not fully believing in himself. “As a student leader at Morehouse, it was hard to adjust to people looking at me for leadership and answers. I had to learn how to believe in myself and apply that belief to every room I step in. This has taken me far and I thank Morehouse for what it has instilled in me.”
“The most fulfilling aspect of my Morehouse experience has been the friendships I have developed. I am in a place with the world's future leaders and listening to people's different perspectives about life truly teaches you a lot. Having the opportunity to develop friendships outside the classroom has been very rewarding. Also, the trust Morehouse college has put into me, especially student services under Dean Booker's leadership, has allowed me to develop as a leader and truly make decisions that affect the student body.”
As he prepares to step out into the world, Michael that “to be a Morehouse Man means to live a life of leadership and service. It is my responsibility – in whatever capacity – to consistently serve my community and lead them to create a change because leadership is not about what you do but about who comes after you.”
