Morehouse College will celebrate Giving Tuesday, a Global Day of Philanthropy, on Nov. 28 with a 24-hour fundraising campaign and livestream broadcast on social media featuring alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends who support the College.
The celebration is part of an international movement to inspire people to give to their favorite charities during the holiday season. Last year, the Morehouse Community of alumni, students, parents, benefactors, employees, and friends donated $1.5 million on Giving Tuesday—a $400,000 increase over the $1.1 million raised in 2021.
Funds raised on Giving Tuesday will support Morehouse’s $500 million “Making Men of Consequence" Campaign to expand support for student scholarships, innovative academic programs, athletic programs, faculty research and recruitment, and campus improvements. The Campaign for Morehouse College has received more than $240 million in contributions to date.
Of approximately 2,300 students who enroll annually at Morehouse, more than half come from families with average household incomes of $40,000 or less. Investment in Morehouse College provides students with a pathway to social mobility and a world-class education.
Morehouse President David A. Thomas, Ph.D., said any donations made on Giving Tuesday will support Morehouse’s rich legacy as the top producer of Black male excellence at scale.
“If you have already contributed to Morehouse this year, thank you for your generosity,” Thomas said. “I hope you will still consider giving again on Giving Tuesday because your loyal support is continually needed to help Morehouse continue to offer a world-class education with even more transformative experiences for our scholars.”
Morehouse also needs investment to prepare for growth. With the end of affirmative action in college admissions, HBCUs such as Morehouse are bracing for a ripple effect: fewer students enrolling at predominately white institutions and increasing numbers seeking enrollment to Black campuses.
That will strain Morehouse’s resources even further, said Hodan Hassan, Vice President of the Morehouse College Office of Institutional Advancement. Applications are expected to double in the next three years. Hassan, who is leading Morehouse’s fundraising efforts, noted that the growing enrollment will make attracting investments comparable to those received by some Ivy League schools even more important.
“Philanthropy is an expression of love when the community comes together to show they care about a cause,” said Hassan. “Morehouse has had an outsized impact on producing men who have used their influence to improve racial inequality and equity in the nation. We encourage our alumni, friends, parents, partners, and employees to contribute to Morehouse on Giving
Tuesday and throughout the year to help Morehouse fulfill its mission of producing exceptional leaders for our times.”
