Wilcher returns to his alma mater with over 30 years of coaching at the Division 1 and professional levels
Morehouse College today announced the selection of Gerard Wilcher ‘92 as the head football coach of the Maroon Tigers football team. The former Rice University defensive backs coach began his coaching career at Morehouse over 30 years ago and now brings a breadth of experience to his home team, including his time as co-defensive coordinator at Lehigh University, where he won four Patriot League Championships and had three NCAA Playoff Appearances during his ten-year tenure. Wilcher has also worked with the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, and Philadelphia Eagles. He has also coached at Delaware State University, Seton Hill University, Cornell University, University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Boston College, and Cheyney University.
“Returning to Morehouse College is a full circle moment,” says Wilcher. “As I embark on this journey, I am excited to lead the Maroon Tigers in orchestrating a winning program that will reflect our core values of Tradition, Integrity, Grit, Effort, Respect, and Sacrifice.”
During his career, Wilcher has spent ten seasons as an NFL Liaison, which yielded several players being drafted and playing in the national league. His recruiting reach is expansive as he has attracted top football talent from 25 states across the country.
"Coach Wilcher brings a wealth of experience from both the collegiate and national level that we believe will positively influence our players both on and off the field,” says Curtis Campbell, athletics director at Morehouse College. “He has a tremendous work ethic, determination, and a remarkable understanding of the game. I look forward to seeing the impact on our players and the football program under his leadership.”
