Shadeed Abdul-Salaam, Director of Sustainability at the Morehouse College Center for Sustainability and Innovation, has been appointed National Co-Chair for the Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability.

The Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability recognizes and celebrates higher education institutions that demonstrate a deep commitment to sustainability and climate action as integral to their academic missions. The new designation will be the third elective classification offered by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, following the classifications for Community Engagement and Leadership for Public Purpose.

Abdul-Salaam joins national leaders from a cohort of 21 diverse institutions, including minority-serving institutions, community colleges, research universities, and liberal arts colleges, participating in a yearlong pilot program. The cohort will help develop the framework, indicators, and application process for the sustainability classification, which will serve as a benchmark for institutional excellence in sustainability across U.S. higher education.

Abdul-Salaam’s selection reflects Morehouse College’s continued leadership in advancing environmental responsibility, innovation, and equity through sustainability initiatives that align with the College’s mission to prepare ethical leaders committed to global impact.
