Geoff Bennett '02, co-anchor of PBS News Hour, Named the 2025 WABJ Journalist of the Year Award

The Washington Association of Black Journalists announced that Geoff Bennett '02, co-anchor of PBS News Hour, is the recipient of the 2025 WABJ Journalist of the Year Award. This award recognizes a Washington, D.C. area Black journalist for their groundbreaking accomplishments and distinguished body of work produced over the past year with extraordinary depth and significance.

Bennett, a proud Morehouse College graduate, was honored at the WABJ 4th Annual Special Honors & Scholarship Gala on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Embassy of France in Washington, D.C..
As co-anchor of PBS NewsHour, Bennett brings excellence, integrity, and purpose to public service journalism. His commitment to stories that inform, illuminate, and inspire has made him a respected voice in broadcast journalism.
“Winning the WABJ Journalist of the Year award is an extraordinary honor — one that affirms the purpose and power of public service journalism,” said Bennett. “This award carries special meaning because it comes from an organization that has long championed equity, excellence, and representation in our field. As a proud Morehouse graduate, I view this moment as an extension of that legacy — a call to lead with purpose, to serve with integrity, and to continue reflecting the fullness and complexity of Black life and experience.”
"WABJ is thrilled to recognize Geoff Bennett as our 2025 Journalist of the Year,” said WABJ President Phil Lewis. “His dedication to public service journalism embodies the values we celebrate.”
The awards gala is a fundraiser to support WABJ scholarships, year-round professional development programming, and the organization’s long-running Urban Journalism Workshop for D.C. area high school students, which is now in its 39th year.
