Morehouse Students Journey to Japan for the 36th Annual International Spring Tour
March 21, 2025Written by: Morehouse College
This year marked a significant milestone for Morehouse College as the institution celebrated the 36th Annual International Spring Tour, continuing a proud legacy of global engagement and academic excellence. From March 8–16, 2025, 22 of Morehouse’s top students, accompanied by five esteemed faculty and staff members, embarked on an immersive journey to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima, Japan.
Led by Mr. Douglas Cooper, Executive Director of Career Development & Engagement, the Spring Tour continues to serve as a gateway for Morehouse Men to explore global business practices, international diplomacy, and the cultural richness of countries beyond U.S. borders.
During their time in Tokyo, the Morehouse contingent engaged in high-level conversations with senior management at Citi Bank and Coca-Cola, gaining firsthand insight into international business operations and the importance of cross-cultural competency in leadership. Students also had the privilege of meeting with representatives from the American Embassy, where they discussed the U.S.-Japan relationship, careers in foreign service, and the evolving role of diplomacy in global affairs.
The Spring Tour’s origins date back to 1982, when it was created by Dr. James Hefner to expose accounting students to major financial institutions and graduate programs. In 1985, under the guidance of Dr. John Williams, the program expanded internationally and continued to flourish under the stewardship of Mr. Benjamin P. McLaurin until 2007. What began as a focused opportunity for accounting majors has since evolved into a transformational experience open to high-achieving students across all disciplines.
Today, the Spring Tour offers Morehouse Men a rare chance to observe global markets, compare foreign customs to domestic practices, and deepen their understanding of how culture, commerce, and leadership intersect on the world stage.
From the historic temples of Kyoto to the sobering peace memorials in Hiroshima, the students not only witnessed Japan’s rich cultural heritage but also reflected on the global challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The tour emphasized that leadership in the 21st century demands global awareness, adaptability, and a deep respect for diversity.
As Morehouse continues to prepare students to lead consequential lives, the International Spring Tour remains a shining example of what it means to be a global citizen.
