Dr. Alexandra Peister Publishes Groundbreaking Research in Genetics
March 18, 2025Written by: Morehouse College
Recent scholarly research by Dr. Alexandra Peister, Associate Professor of Biology, has been published in microPublication Biology.
Dr. Peister’s article, "The M.3.2 mutation in Drosophila melanogaster as a novel allele of tout-velu," was co-authored by several researchers, including both former and current Morehouse students. This collaborative approach underscores her commitment to mentorship, hands-on research experiences, and scientific discovery at the undergraduate level.
Her work utilized the F1p/FRT system to generate mitotic clones within the developing eye of Drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies). This method allows researchers to study genetic mutations in a controlled and precise manner, providing new insights into gene function and development.
This latest publication builds on Dr. Peister’s previous work on the teaching effectiveness of this project, which was published two years ago. Her research not only contributes to the scientific understanding of genetic mutations but also demonstrates the power of active learning in the laboratory—giving students meaningful opportunities to engage in original research.
Dr. Peister’s success reflects the Morehouse College commitment to academic excellence and research innovation. By integrating students into cutting-edge scientific inquiry, she continues to inspire and train the next generation of biologists, geneticists, and medical professionals.
Congratulations to Dr. Peister and her co-authors on this outstanding achievement! We look forward to seeing how this research impacts the field of genetics and enriches student learning at Morehouse.
