Dr. Juliet Elu, esteemed Charles Merrill Endowed Professor, has made significant efforts over the last academic year to advance the fields of international education and research at Morehouse College.
In the Fall of 2023, Dr. Elu taught two sections of Principles of Economics and an Economic Development course. In the Spring of 2024, she continued with two sections of Principles of Economics and introduced an International Trade course. These upper-division courses are research-intensive, allowing students to delve into international economics topics and apply their econometrics skills.
Dr. Elu's dedication to student research is evident through her mentorship, guiding students in exploring research methodologies and intellectual curiosities. Her students have gained valuable skills in integrating economic tools into policy decisions. Notably, two of her students will be attending graduate school in the Fall of 2024, and several students presented their research posters during the College Research Day organized by the Academic Affairs Office.
Dr. Elu's service extends beyond the classroom. At the college level, she has been nominated to serve on the Curriculum Committee for the upcoming academic year. Within the Division, she has contributed to the fundraising committee, research committee, and played a key role in organizing the EB Williams Banquet and research colloquium.
Dr. Elu's research productivity over the past academic year has been remarkable. Her article on genital circumcision was published and presented as a policy paper at the United Nations conference in New York in 2024, advocating against gender mutilation practices in West African countries. Furthermore, she served as a policy analyst on the impact of Naira depreciation in Nigeria and was recognized as one of the most productive scholars among HBCUs.
Dr. Elu's dedication to teaching, service, and research has greatly benefited our students, faculty, and the broader community. Her work exemplifies the mission of Morehouse College and the purpose of the Charles Merrill Endowment, and we are proud to celebrate her achievements.
