Dr. Kinnis Gosha, a 13th-year Professor of Computer Science at Morehouse College, has created the largest Computer Science PhD pipeline for Black males in the nation, with 15% of Black male CS doctoral students coming from his research lab. As Director of the Morehouse Center for Broadening Participation in Computing and recipient of the prestigious Hortinius I. Chenault Endowed Professorship, Dr. Gosha has achieved remarkable success.
Dr. Gosha has secured over $40 million in research and philanthropic funding through 26 federally funded grant awards and has over 80 peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, he launched the first BS degree in Software Engineering at an HBCU in 2019 and introduced Coursera at Morehouse in 2021.
One of Dr. Gosha’s most impactful initiatives is the RISE UP Male Mentoring Program. Supported by the Chenault Chair, this program is a collaboration between the Morehouse Center for Broadening Participation in Computing, DeKalb County Office of Youth Services, Human Service Department, and Microsoft.
The 2024 program, themed “Expeditions in Computing,” will mentor and coach approximately 60 male youth from DeKalb County, ranging from 6th to 12th grades. Dr. Gosha and five computing teachers from the Atlanta metro area will guide students through technology electives such as “Salesforce Associate,” “Conversational AI,” “Game Development,” “Web Programming,” and “Sphero Robotics.” The program runs every Saturday from June 15th to July 27th, excluding July 6th.
Dr. Gosha’s work at Morehouse College not only advances academic excellence but also significantly impacts the community by fostering the next generation of tech leaders. His efforts in broadening participation in computing and supporting young Black males in STEM are paving the way for a more inclusive future in technology.
