Dr. Sonya Loftis Publishes, Lectures, and Leads New Book Series

This summer has been a season of scholarly achievement for Dr. Sonya Loftis, M. Mitchell Endowed Professor in the English Department at Morehouse. A widely recognized scholar in disability studies and early modern literature, Dr. Loftis continues to advance critical conversations that bridge literary scholarship, pedagogy, and advocacy.
Dr. Loftis serves as editor of the Edinburgh Critical Studies in Early Modern Literature and Disability book series for Edinburgh University Press. The first book in the groundbreaking series was published this summer, marking an important step in expanding the field’s engagement with questions of embodiment, accessibility, and inclusion in early modern texts.
In addition to her editorial work, Dr. Loftis contributed an invited case to the University of Oxford’s Neurodivergent Education for Students, Teaching, and Learning Toolkit. This resource is designed to provide educators with practical strategies for supporting neurodiverse learners in higher education, reflecting Dr. Loftis’s commitment to equity in the classroom.
Her expertise also took her abroad in June 2025, when she presented an invited lecture at the University of Oxford. Her talk, focused on neurodiverse pedagogy, was part of the larger Neurodivergent Education for Students, Teaching, and Learning project . Through this work, Dr. Loftis is helping to shape international conversations around inclusive teaching practices that benefit all students.
Dr. Loftis’s scholarship and advocacy continue to inspire new approaches to literature, teaching, and the creation of more inclusive academic communities.
