Morehouse Junior Elliot Howsie III Named 2025 NBA x HBCU Fellow

    May 2, 2025

Morehouse College is proud to celebrate Elliot Howsie III, a junior Business Administration major with a concentration in Finance from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for his selection as a 2025 NBA x HBCU Fellow. Out of more than 8,800 applicants nationwide, Elliot was chosen as one of only 73 fellows for this prestigious and highly competitive opportunity.

What makes Elliot’s achievement even more exceptional is his assignment: he will report directly to Anshell Boggs, the NBA’s Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Management & Insurance Officer. This summer, Elliot will serve in the NBA’s Risk Management & Insurance Department, where he’ll support enterprise risk management (ERM) initiatives, youth programs, insurance policy registers, and automation projects.

For Elliot, this moment is deeply personal. His passion for leadership and impact began early—at just 9 years old, he wrote and published his first book, Life Is Too Short To Be Scared, which debuted at Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Centennial National Convention in 2013. His early work drew the attention of NBA legend and author Amar’e Stoudemire, who highlighted Elliot’s story in his own writing, recognizing the young author’s purpose-driven journey.

On campus, Elliot is a Dean’s List scholar and active campus leader. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Morehouse-Spelman Pre-Law Society (2025–2026), is a dedicated member of the Morehouse Business Association, and is a fellow in the Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) Career Prep Program. He also gives back to the Morehouse community as a Residential Advisor and mentor in the LYTEhouse Mentorship Program.

Elliot’s path to this fellowship was anything but linear. After not being selected for the NBA x HBCU Fellowship in 2024, he chose to grow from the experience rather than give up. He returned to work at the Allegheny County Budget & Finance Department in Pennsylvania—home to Pittsburgh and the state’s second-largest county—where he played a key role in reconciling billion-dollar budgets and managing financial reporting for government grants and forecasts.

Simultaneously, Elliot immersed himself in experiential learning through the DREAM Foundation, helping plan a mock VIP event for the Kinder’s Texas Bowl. Traveling to the game, he gained real-world exposure to the business side of sports, including operations, sponsorships, fan engagement, and game-day execution.

Elliot credits mentorship as a vital part of his journey, particularly the guidance of Fredrick Salyers, the NBA HBCU Fellowship Lead and a proud Morehouse alumnus, who provided insight and encouragement throughout the process. Elliot also leaned on support from the MLT Career Prep Program and incorporated lessons from his various leadership roles on campus to present a well-rounded and impactful profile.

From writing a book in elementary school to earning a seat at the NBA’s table, Elliot Howsie III exemplifies the power of perseverance, purpose, and preparation. He is honored to represent Morehouse College on this national stage and looks forward to using this opportunity to inspire and uplift others—just as he has always done.
