As a sociology major from Waldorf, Md. and the current senior class president, James Cornell Peele has put service and scholarship at the center of his work. While maintaining an academic scholarship, James has served as part of the New Student Orientation; the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Class Councils; HOPE Dealers; Get On The Bus; The AUC Agency; the Summer Training Academy for Research Success at the University of California, San Diego; Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society; and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. After graduation, James will be heading to Columbia University in New York City to pursue his Master of Social Work.
“I have a passion for not only helping marginalized groups within society, but also understanding them and learning what can be done as people with privilege to move towards a more progressive society,” he said. “I hope to go into a career field that is causing true impact on society through true experience from learning what their actual needs are.”
James describes his Morehouse experience as “transformational.”
“This experience erases every thought of how successful you thought you would be growing up and multiplies that person by 10,” he said. “It provides the space and flexibility to explore and embrace your authentic self.”
“Being a ‘Morehouse Man’ to me does not have a set look, but a presence. Being able to walk with confidence into any space, stand up securely for what you believe in, and perform everything to the best of your ability while creating opportunities for those behind you, are all attributes of a ‘Morehouse Man’ to me.”
