Dr. Eddie S. Glaude Jr. Elected to Morehouse College Board of Trustees

    August 17, 2021

ATLANTA—Morehouse College has elected alumnus, famed academician, and award-winning author Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Ph.D. ’89 to its Board of Trustees. Chair of Princeton University’s Department of African American Studies and the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor, Dr. Glaude’s scholarship and public appearances explore the complex dynamics of the American experience. He is the author of “Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own,” a New York Times bestseller named one of the best books of the year by Time magazine and winner of the Harriet Beecher Stowe Book Prize. His other well-known books, including “Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul,” and “In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America,” take a wide look at Black communities, the difficulties of race in the United States, and the challenges our democracy face. Another book, “Exodus! Religion, Race and Nation in the Early 19th Century America,” was awarded the Modern Language Association’s William Sanders Scarborough Book Prize.

“I am absolutely delighted to join the Board of Trustees,” said Glaude. “This is an enormous responsibility to help ensure the long-term success of our alma mater. And I am ready to get to work.”

Glaude began his studies at Morehouse at the age of 16 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1989 after serving as student body president. He earned a master’s degree in African American studies from Temple University, earned a Ph.D. in religion from Princeton University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Colgate University and Claflin University. He began his teaching career at Bowdoin College. He is a frequent columnist for Time Magazine and a regular contributor on television programs including “Meet the Press,” “Morning Joe,” and “Deadline Whitehouse with Nicolle Wallace.” Morehouse awarded him the Benjamin Elijah Mays “Bennie” Alumni Trailblazer Award in 2020.

“We are thrilled to have one of our very distinguished alumni join the Board of Trustees,” said Willie E. Woods, chairperson of the Morehouse College Board of Trustees. “Dr. Glaude will provide valuable insights on our educational programs and policies, given his deep experience in higher education, and on our student engagement initiatives given his experience as a student leader during his days at Morehouse. We look forward to his service and our work together to serve the College.”

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of Morehouse College. The election of Trustee Glaude occurred during its summer meeting. For more information about Morehouse College, visit morehouse.edu.
