Three Morehouse Students Recognized As Gilman Scholars

    May 6, 2018

Three Morehouse College scholars were recently named as recipients of the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship sponsored by the American Councils for International Education of the U.S. State Department.

The three Gilman Scholars are currently Chinese Studies majors or minors at Morehouse College. The Gilman Scholarship is a highly competitive award designed to increase the number of Americans studying and working abroad as interns. The students hone skills that are critical to U.S. national security and prosperity.

The Morehouse College Gilman Scholars are: Timothy Jones and Andre Carter, both sophomores, and Je’quan Sallies-Irving, a freshman.

Jones will spend eight weeks studying at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. Carter and Je’quan Sallies-Irving will study in mainland China for four weeks as part of Morehouse College's intensive China Study Abroad program, which is based at the University of Science and Technology Beijing.

"The Chinese Studies Program prides itself on furthering students’ global education," said Dr. Ruihua Shen, professor and director of The Chinese Studies Program at Morehouse College. "Over the last three years, five Morehouse students at the Chinese Studies Program have received this scholarship, which enables them to participate in the summer or semester China & Taiwan Intensive Chinese Language and Cultural Study Programs."
