    November 25, 2024

Morehouse College and Spelman College are delighted to present the 98th Annual Christmas Carol Concert, a cherished holiday tradition that kicks off festive cheer to the Atlanta community. This three-night concert series, free and open to the public, begins on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Morehouse College’s Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. It will continue at Spelman College’s Sisters Chapel on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m., and culminate with a final performance at Morehouse on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 6:00 p.m. Doors will open one hour prior to each performance, and all concerts will be available via live stream on the YouTube channels of both institutions.

save_the_date_ccc-01 1“The 98th Annual Christmas Carol Concert will feature a delightful blend of classic carols, contemporary renditions of holiday songs, and cherished favorites, ensuring an uplifting experience for all who attend,” said Dr. David Morrow, director of the 113-year-old Morehouse College Glee Club. “The Morehouse College Glee Club will perform carols from across the globe, culminating in our signature Nigerian carol, Betelehemu, a tradition we’ve proudly carried on for 59 years and counting!"

In addition to traditional carols, the Glee Clubs will showcase classical works, spirituals, and gospel music by prominent African American composers, including Margaret Bonds, Undine Smith Moore, William Dawson, Wendell Whalum, Kevin Johnson, Mark Butler, and Rollo Dillworth.

This year, the Spelman Glee Club is celebrating its centennial anniversary, marking a remarkable milestone in the institution’s rich musical history. As the oldest collegiate choir of African American women in the United States, the Glee Club has not only preserved the legacy of Black choral music but has also inspired generations of young women to find their voices and share their artistry with the world.

“We are especially thrilled to present this year’s Christmas Carol Concert marking 100 years of captivating audiences with soulful harmonies,” said Dr. Kevin Johnson, director of the Spelman College Glee Club. “This milestone is a celebration of the Glee Club’s musical excellence and a legacy that continues to resonate as our students share their talents and passion with the community each holiday season.”

This cherished concert series tradition began in 1927, established by Spelman President Florence Matilda Read and Morehouse President John Hope. Originally held in Spelman’s Sisters Chapel, the event has evolved into an annual celebration, embraced by the community and bringing festive joy.
