On July 30-31, 2024, Morehouse College had the privilege of hosting the Building Decarbonization Training for HBCU Teachers and Students. Organized by Shadeed Abdul-Salaam, Director of Sustainability at the Center for Sustainability and Innovation at Morehouse, in collaboration with the Building Decarbonization Learning Alliance (BDLA) and other esteemed partners, the event was a significant step towards advancing environmental education and sustainability practices among HBCU Colleges.

The two-day event kicked off on Tuesday, July 30, with a lunch in the Kilgore Seminar Rooms, setting the stage for a series of insightful presentations and discussions.

The event featured a lineup of distinguished speakers, including:

    • Dr. Anthony Kinslow II, founder and CEO of Gemini Energy Solutions and a lecturer at Stanford University, who spoke on equitable decarbonization.
    • Peter Rumsey, founder of Point Energy Innovations and a Stanford adjunct lecturer, who provided a comprehensive introduction to building decarbonization, heat pumps, and efficient lighting.
    • Felicia Davis, founder of the HBCU Green Fund, who shared insights into funding green projects at HBCUs.
    • Dr. Richard Gragg, president of the HBCU Energy Institute, who introduced the institute’s initiatives.
    • Alpha Arsano, assistant professor at Northeastern University, who discussed teaching strategies using gaming via Zoom.

The event was a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of building a community focused on sustainability and innovation. Attendees had the opportunity to learn from experts, share their own strategies, and network with peers dedicated to advancing environmental education and sustainable practices at HBCUs.

Morehouse College remains committed to fostering a sustainable future and empowering the next generation of environmental leaders. This event is just one of many initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental justice.

With the knowledge and connections gained from this training, Morehouse and its partners are well-equipped to continue their efforts in building a greener, more equitable world.

We look forward to more such enriching events and collaborations in the future, as we strive to make a lasting impact on our community and beyond.
