Professor Avery O. Williams '86 writes Screenplay for Lifetime Original "Abducted at an HBCU: A Black Girl Missing Movie"

    July 16, 2024

Professor Avery O. Williams '86, an Assistant Professor in the Cinema, Television. and Emerging Media Studies (CTEMS) Department, has written the screenplay for a gripping new Lifetime Original Movie, "Abducted at an HBCU: A Black Girl Missing Movie." This film, which stars Naturi Naughton ("Power") and Tanyell Quian ("Queen Sugar"), brings attention to a compelling and often overlooked narrative.

The plot follows an ambitious student at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) who is struggling to pay her tuition when she suddenly stops attending classes. Her disappearance goes unnoticed by everyone except her dedicated college advisor, who embarks on a perilous journey through the city to find her. This storyline not only provides suspense and drama but also highlights the unique challenges faced by students at HBCUs.

Lifetime, known for its original storytelling, sought new and diverse environments for its films. After the success of last year's "Black Girl Missing," producers were eager for more unique stories. Professor Williams pitched his idea, which perfectly blended the network's goals. "I had plenty of ideas," Williams shared. "I pitched my concept, they liked it, then hired me to write the script. A few months later, it was on their schedule to produce."

The production team, including executive producer Garcelle Beauvais, recognized the value of authenticity and chose to shoot part of the film on the Morehouse College campus. This decision not only provided a realistic setting but also created invaluable opportunities for CTEMS alumni and current Morehouse students. Many of them served as production assistants and background actors, gaining hands-on experience in the film industry.

"The Lifetime and production company producers are a smart team and great to work with," Williams said. "The crew eagerly took any interested student under their wing, allowing them to shadow and participate as much as possible. It was a rich experience for our students."

The success of this project is a testament to the collaborative spirit at Morehouse College. Professor Williams expressed immense pride in his students and colleagues who contributed to making this project a reality. Special thanks were given to Henry, Kendrick, Michael, Paula, Stephane, Kennard, Hodan, James, and Stephanie for their gracious support.

"Abducted at an HBCU: A Black Girl Missing Movie" is set to premiere on the Lifetime Channel on Saturday, July 20 at 8/7c and will be available for streaming the following day.
