Meet Graduating Student Ambassador, Devontae Patterson

    May 12, 2025

From the moment he stepped onto the campus of Morehouse College, Devontae Patterson knew he would chart his own course. A proud Communication and Theatre & Performance major from Houston, Texas, Devontae has spent the last four years not only honing his craft but also discovering the power of self-affirmation and authenticity.

As a distinguished member of both the Morehouse College Theatre Ensemble and the Morehouse College Student Ambassadors, Devontae has made his mark on campus through service, creativity, and leadership. His commitment to excellence has earned him the Martin L. King Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship, multiple appearances on the Dean’s List, Honor Roll recognition, and the honor of graduating cum laude.

But his path wasn’t without challenges. Starting college during the height of COVID-19 presented intense isolation. Devontae battled through social anxiety, and the pressure to conform. In doing so, he learned to trust his heart, embrace discernment, and remain unapologetically true to himself.

Reflecting on his time at Morehouse, Devontae calls the experience “unique and magical.” One of his most cherished moments came in fall 2025 during the Theatre Ensemble’s production of 7 Spools of Thread, which featured live music and a full band—an experience he describes as “truly magical.” He believes the magic of Morehouse lies not only in its history but in the ways students defy expectations within the walls of 830 Westview Drive.

Looking ahead, Devontae plans to pursue a master’s degree in Theatre and Communication at either NYU or USC. His long-term dream is to start his own production company and become one of the prominent Black faces in Hollywood. “It would be a waste to let my creativity sit at a desk all day,” he says. “I truly believe I’m one of the most unique people I know.”

Devontae credits his success to the unwavering support of his village—his family, friends, and Morehouse community—who have helped him find a home and purpose.

His advice to future Men of Morehouse is simple but powerful: “Don’t do this for your mom, dad, sister, cousin, or anyone else. Do it for you. If being selfish means speaking up, living your truth, and doing what makes you happy, then I am the most selfish person in the world.”

Congratulations, Devontae. Hollywood better make room.
