Exploring International Business Dynamics with Dr. Gabriela Piscopo: A Summer in Barcelona

    August 28, 2024

This summer, Dr. Gabriela Piscopo, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, led an extraordinary study abroad program titled “Business and Culture in Barcelona, Spain.” Collaborating with CEA-CAPA, Dr. Piscopo crafted an immersive experience that combined international business education with a deep dive into Spanish and Catalonian cultures. The program's mission was clear: to provide students with a robust understanding of global business dynamics while fostering essential cross-cultural competencies necessary for today’s interconnected world.

140484371_barcelona5Over the course of three weeks, Morehouse students were introduced to the complexities of international business through hands-on learning and real-world experiences in one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. Barcelona, known for its unique blend of history, art, and commerce, served as an ideal backdrop for the program. Students engaged in coursework designed to draw meaningful comparisons between American, Spanish, and Catalonian business practices, providing a holistic view of global commerce.

A standout experience of the program was a visit to b-combinator, a renowned venture capital firm in Catalonia. Here, students were given a front-row seat to the region’s thriving entrepreneurship ecosystem. They explored how innovative start-ups are being nurtured and how venture capitalists evaluate potential investments, offering an in-depth look at the entrepreneurial landscape of Spain. This experience not only broadened their understanding of venture capital operations but also allowed them to connect directly with industry professionals, enhancing their global business acumen.

Beyond business, the program placed a strong emphasis on cultural immersion. Students had the opportunity to visit the Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí’s iconic masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour provided not only a lesson in architecture but also a glimpse into Barcelona’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Another unique highlight was attending a castellers practice, where participants witnessed the construction of human towers, a tradition unique to Catalonia. This experience allowed students to see first-hand the importance of teamwork, trust, and communication—key elements that are as vital in building human towers as they are in successful business ventures. Such cultural experiences were instrumental in helping students appreciate the diversity of perspectives and practices in the global business environment.

The "Business and Culture in Barcelona, Spain" program proved to be more than just an academic endeavor. For the students, it was a transformative journey that expanded their worldview, honed their cross-cultural communication skills, and deepened their understanding of international business dynamics. Under Dr. Piscopo’s guidance, participants were not only able to expand their academic knowledge but also to cultivate essential skills and perspectives that will serve them in their future careers.
