Morehouse Scholars Lead the Way at the HBCU Climate Change Conference
March 13, 2025Written by: Morehouse College
Recently, the Morehouse Environmental Justice and Sustainability Program (EJSP) Fellows and Morehouse College Scholars participated in the HBCU Climate Change Conference, gaining invaluable insights and forging meaningful connections. Dr. Ethell Vereen, assistant professor of biology, accompanied the students, guiding them through this enriching experience.
The EJSP program is dedicated to cultivating the next generation of leaders in environmental justice and sustainability through faculty-mentored research experiences. These experiences immerse undergraduate scholars in transdisciplinary research, exploring how data is gathered, analyzed, and communicated to inform stakeholders and policymakers. By engaging in the scientific process, EJSP scholars deepen their understanding of environmental challenges and develop the skills necessary to drive impactful change.
Special recognition goes to Khalil Johnson, a biology major, who earned first place in the student presentations. His dedication, passion, and scholarly excellence exemplify the high standards upheld at Morehouse College.
Gratitude extends to the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice, and their dedicated support teams for fostering spaces of learning, advocacy, and transformative action.
The Morehouse Environmental Justice and Sustainability Program values the connections made with colleagues and community partners throughout the conference. These relationships strengthen collective efforts to address pressing environmental and climate issues, ensuring HBCU students and scholars remain at the forefront of this essential work.
Together, the Morehouse community continues to build a future where student voices lead the charge for environmental and climate justice. Onward and upward, Morehouse College.
