Morehouse Men Spike Lee, John David Washington Among Golden Globe Contenders

    December 7, 2018

Morehouse Men Spike Lee ’79 and John David Washington ’06 could take home Golden Globe Awards for their outstanding work in the historic drama BlacKkKlansman, a blockbuster that grossed more than $88 million at the box office.

The film, directed by Lee, has received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture-Drama from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

BlacKkKlansman follows the courageous work of Ron Stallworth, a pioneering African American detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan during an undercover mission.

Academy Award-winner Lee produced the film, which was based on a true story. Jordan Peele was also part of the team that produced BlacKkKlansman. Peele, who visited Morehouse last year, won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2018.

Washington, a former Maroon Tiger and NFL football player, also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ron Stallworth in BlacKkKlansman. Another actor in the drama, Adam Driver, earned a nod for Best Supporting Actor.

Washington shared a text with Entertainment Weekly about his experience on the film:

“This group from all different walks of life that Spike assembled. I’ve just become real friends with these guys. That’s been the biggest takeaway. I love Adam like a brother … I’m so happy to be representing Spike Lee. So many minorities and people of color in this industry have been standing on his shoulders. It makes me so happy that, after four decades, people still enjoy and connect with what he does. He’s a master of cinematic tone. There’s nobody like him. To be able to celebrate and represent the film on that grand stage with all the homies is going to be very nice.”

The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC coast to coast on Sunday, Jan. 6.
