Justice Delayed, Not Denied: Justin Moore ’09 and the Pardon of Marcus Garvey

    February 28, 2025

Justin Moore ’09 has carved out a lasting legacy through relentless advocacy and an unwavering dedication to justice. As a civil rights attorney and trusted advisor to President Biden, Moore played a pivotal role in securing a posthumous presidential pardon for Marcus Garvey — a century after his wrongful conviction. This landmark achievement stands as a powerful testament to Moore’s impact, showcasing the profound influence of his work on the course of history.

Marcus Garvey, a towering figure in the fight for Black liberation, was unjustly convicted of mail fraud in 1923. For decades, activists, scholars, and descendants called for justice, but it was Justin’s strategic engagement with President Biden that finally turned the tide. Leveraging years of experience as an advisor on pardons and justice reform, Justin meticulously built a case for Garvey’s exoneration, emphasizing the historical weight of correcting this miscarriage of justice.

His path to this moment was forged at Morehouse College, where he studied philosophy and honed the critical thinking skills that now inform his legal practice. “Morehouse taught me the power of using my voice for change,” Justin reflects. “It instilled in me a sense of duty to my community and the confidence to stand before presidents and demand justice.”

Through his work with The Garvey Institute for Human Development and his role at FiftyOne Ai, Justin bridges historical advocacy with modern innovation, showing current students and fellow alumni what’s possible when conviction meets strategy. His journey illustrates a clear blueprint for impact: develop deep expertise, cultivate trust, and act with audacity.

Moore’s victory is more than a legal achievement; it’s a beacon for future generations of Morehouse Men. It proves that the lessons learned within our gates — integrity, brotherhood, and social responsibility — have the power to change the world. As we celebrate this landmark moment, we’re reminded that a Morehouse education doesn’t just prepare students for careers; it equips them to shape history.

To our students and alumni: Moore's story is your call to action. Stand firm in your principles, sharpen your skills, and know that with persistence and purpose, you too can carry forward the legacy of justice and liberation.
