Letter from the President: Support for Student Activism and Peaceful Assembly
May 8, 2024Written by: Morehouse College
Dear Morehouse,
I want to restate our unwavering commitment to the principles of free speech, peaceful assembly, and the right to protest. These values are not only fundamental to our democracy but also integral to the mission of our institution.
Recently, there have been concerns raised about the treatment of students who have chosen to exercise their right to protest in solidarity with various causes, including the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel. It has come to my attention that there have been reports of students facing threats of expulsion for their participation in peaceful demonstrations.
I want to make it unequivocally clear that no person with administrative enrollment authority at Morehouse College has threatened a student with expulsion for peacefully expressing their opinions, assembling, or protesting. Our institution stands firmly against any form of retaliation or suppression of student activism.
As we approach our upcoming commencement exercises, I want to emphasize that Morehouse College fully supports peaceful and non-disruptive acts of solidarity that do not interrupt the flow of the honored celebration. We recognize that wearable accessories of solidarity, such as a stole, cap decor, or collar pin, can be powerful symbols of support for important causes.
However, it is essential that we maintain a spirit of peace, respect, and joy during this momentous occasion for the resilient Class of 2024 and their loved ones. We do not want any further attention to be diverted from their long-awaited day of celebration.
In conclusion, let us continue to uphold the values of free speech and peaceful protest while honoring the achievements of our graduates. Together, we can create a community where diverse perspectives are welcomed and constructive dialogue thrives.
Sincerely,
+++
