Boston and Cambridge came alive this past weekend as the city welcomed the 2025 Essence HBCU Classic, featuring Morehouse College and Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), a private historically Black university in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Held at the iconic Harvard Stadium, the Classic delivered the full HBCU football experience; complete with the excitement of the game, the energy of the bands, the pride of alumni, and a weekend filled with cultural celebrations and community spirit. For many in attendance, it was their first introduction to the magic of HBCU culture, and Boston embraced it with open arms.
Morehouse College President David A. Bowman expressed his gratitude to the many partners and leaders who made the event possible, including Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Rep. Brandy Fluker-Reid, Essence, Michael Bivins, Meet Boston USA, Campus Rise, Harvard University, and JCSU President Valerie Kinloch. Their collaboration and vision helped ensure the HBCU Classic was not just a success, but a milestone moment for the city.
The Classic was a celebration of legacy, culture, and opportunity. By bringing the HBCU experience to Boston, the event showcased the enduring impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and created new bridges between communities.
Thank you, Boston, for making history with us.
