Morehouse and Spelman Colleges’ Secure SpelHouse Trademark & Launch Limited Edition Capsule Collection

 Morehouse College and Spelman College have officially trademarked the wordmark “SpelHouse,” a phrase most identified with the institutions’ joint homecoming activities but symbolic of the historic bond between these two, single-gender, liberal arts colleges. To celebrate the occasion, Morehouse and Spelman have partnered with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) and ProStandard on a limited-edition capsule collection, now available for purchase in both colleges’ on-campus and online bookstores. Furthermore, as the term was coined by their communities, in the coming weeks, the institutions will launch a design competition for the artwork for the official SpelHouse logo. Exclusive to student, alumni, and employee participation, the contest welcomes creative submissions that capture the history of SpelHouse while helping to define its future visual identity.

The partnership between Morehouse College and Spelman College stands as a distinctive model in higher education, and the “SpelHouse” community represents more than neighborhood geography; it stands for shared community, history, traditions, and a legacy between two of the nation’s top ranking and most renowned historically Black colleges and universities. By trademarking the term, the Colleges are claiming ownership of their names, images, and likeness, while protecting both brands from dilution and misuse by external entities. With the rise of branded merchandise businesses, many have capitalized on HBCUs, their culture and passionate communities without proper licensing or invested connections to the schools. By obtaining the SpelHouse trademark, the two colleges are ensuring that their independent identities and reputations – linked to this shared name – remain protected and properly uplifted in accordance with both institutional values.
