Dr. Kendrick Brown and Dr. Hideko Sera Publish Groundbreaking Study on Student Belonging at HBCUs

The Morehouse College academic community is proud to announce the publication of a peer-reviewed paper co-authored by Dr. Kendrick Brown, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor in the Psychology Department, and Dr. Hideko Sera, Executive Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Their collaborative work, titled "Prescribed, Ritualized, and Activated Belonging: A Qualitative Study of Student Belonging at an HBCU," is published by the American Psychological Association and currently appears in the Journal of Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
This qualitative study delves into the nuanced experiences of student belonging within the context of a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The authors identify and analyze three core dimensions of belonging:

Prescribed Belonging: Institutional frameworks and traditions that foster a sense of community.

Ritualized Belonging: Cultural and ceremonial practices that reinforce identity and inclusion.

Activated Belonging: The personal and collective agency of students in cultivating a sense of inclusion and connection.
Through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, the paper illuminates how these dimensions interplay to create a unique environment that supports student success and personal development.
Dr. Brown and Dr. Sera’s research underscores the critical role HBCUs play in fostering inclusive spaces where students can thrive academically and socially. Their findings provide valuable insights for higher education leaders seeking to enhance belonging and equity across diverse student populations.
