Tyrius Walker is a graduating kinesiology major from Atlanta, Ga., and a decorated Morehouse basketball player, including the SIAC Player of the Year Award, NCAA All-American honors, NABC Division II All-America Team and All-District South First Team, 3x team MVP, 3x SIAC All-Conference Team, and 3x Franklin L. Forbes Award recipient.
During his senior year in 2019, Tyrius left Morehouse to enter the NBA Draft, after which he played for the New York Knicks during the summer league, gaining a reputation for “always [performing] his best when his best is needed.” He returned to Morehouse in 2020 to finish what he started. After graduating, Tyrius plans to continue his pursuit of a professional basketball career with the long-term goal of changing the financial trajectory of his family member’s lives.
After graduating from high school without an invitation to play on the collegiate level and almost becoming ineligible, Tyrius has made a way out of seemingly no way with the support of Morehouse mentors and coaches.
“If it wasn’t for Coach Brewer taking a chance on me, then who knows how my story would have been,” he said. “I’ve grown tremendously since my freshman year. I’ve strengthened my decision-making skills and increased my patience to know that what’s meant to happen will happen for me.”
As an athlete with professional basketball aspirations, Tyrius is often asked why he chose to attend Morehouse.
“I always tell high school players that you don’t have to go to a Division 1 school to get to the NBA,” he said. “Make people remember your name by showing people how you are different every time you step on the court. Morehouse truly changes lives – just look at the powerful legacies of the men that came before us – not only on campus, but the world. That alone is enough motivation to choose to be a man of Morehouse.”
