Dr. Miesha Williams Named 2018 Vulcan Materials Company Teaching Excellence Award Winner

    June 23, 2018

Dr. Miesha Williams, an assistant professor in the Department of Economics, has been named the 2018-2019 Vulcan Materials Company’s Teaching Excellence Award recipient at Morehouse College.

Established in 1991, the Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award honors an outstanding professor on selected member campuses of the Georgia Independent College Association. The annual award is presented to a member of the faculty in recognition of excellence in teaching, commitment to student success, and leadership to enhance campus community.

“I’m so deeply honored and grateful to receive Teaching Excellence Award,” Williams said.  “For the past four years, I have been deeply immersed in the values, tenets and beliefs that Morehouse College holds because I love those things. More importantly, I love my students and the people who I can inspire before they matriculate out of the College. I want my students to look at me and envision the same success in themselves, because, in essence, my colleagues and I are giving young, black men intellectual ammunition and permission to go out into the world and be excellent.”

Williams teaches microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, among other topics. She has been a member of a number of Morehouse committees, including Admissions, Faculty Development, and the Division of Business and Economics’ International Spring Tour. Williams has also served as a Morehouse Pan African Pedagogy Institute leader, advisor to the Economics Club, and has been an Admitted Students’ Day lecturer.

She is a member of the American Economic Association, the Diversity Initiative for Tenure in Economics, the National Economic Association, the PhD Project in conjunction with the Finance Doctoral Student Association, and the West African Finance and Economics Association.

Past Morehouse College Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award winners include mathematics professor Ulrica Wilson, longtime political science professor Tobe Johnson ’54, former economics professor John Handy, and Music Department Chairman Uzee Brown ’72.
