    Morehouse College Remembers Dr. Willis "Butch" Sheftall Jr. '64

    Dear Morehouse colleagues,

    Alumnus and former professor, provost, and once-acting president, Dr. Willis "Butch" Sheftall Jr. '64, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the age of 80.

    Dr. Sheftall dedicated nearly 34 years to this institution, during which he profoundly shaped its academic and ethical foundations. He served in roles including various faculty positions, the Charles Merrill Chair of Economics (1986-1997), special assistant to the president (1998-99, 2011), as well as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs (1999-2005, 2007-2008, 2012-2013).

    122775047_4766771776696600_3687085179578826315_nHis visionary leadership helped secure national accreditation for the College's business administration program, implemented the creation of academic divisions, and led to the establishment of the then-Morehouse College Leadership Center. He also served in several board and advisory roles, impacting education, healthcare, and economic policy in Atlanta and beyond.

    To honor Dr. Sheftall's wishes, a memorial service will not be held. Arrangements have been entrusted to F.L. Sims Funeral Home - Smyrna, located at 2201 S Cobb Dr. SE, Smyrna, GA 30080.
